The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) approved the amended auction draft last Wednesday and laid out the bidding timeline. LEO satellite technology provides a range of benefits such as lower latency, which could be a boon for high-speed internet services and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, drone technology and applications. Thailand's first auction of four satellite orbital slot packages slated for July 24 is expected to be less appealing to potential bidders despite the telecom regulator's efforts to lower starting bids for some packages and ease bidding conditions.Ĭoncerns have been raised about investments in a geostationary satellite - which operates 36,000 kilometres from the Earth's surface and leverages these orbital slots - as it would entail a financial burden on the operators compared to investments in the low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite business.
